Micro Lighting is very similar to hang gliding apart from the fact that you have an engine to power you rather than just using the wind and air currents. As with hang gliding flying and travelling in a micro light can be an absolutely fantastic way to see the local country side and wildlife from the air. What better way to see the scenery than from the sky?
A micro light is actually either a single or two-seater aviation machine that has a 5 gallon (US size) fuel capacity. These machines are light weight and highly manoeuvrable but also slow moving as well meaning that they can be quite inexpensive to fly. It is obviously advisable to go with a pilot if you do not have any experience in flying them however regulation is generally quite minimal. In countries such as the US you do not actually need to have a specific pilotâ??s license to fly the machines however it is not advisable to do so. It is also important to look into what all the different rules are in the specific country you are in. Micro lights themselves are not subject to rigorous safety checks. Over the last few years manufacturers have taken big strides in terms of safety and precautions and so rather than equipment malfunction being the cause of accidents is generally comes down to pilot error.
It is important to have the relevant insurance when micro light flying because as you can imagine there is a high risk of injury and accident. As mentioned most accidents come from human error and often occur during take off and landing. These can range from hitting trees, power cables and making a mistake on the run in. Micro Light flying is dangerous and so is regarded as a Grade 4 hazardous sport.
